Houston Date Ideas: The History

Richmond Strip and Bayou Mama's were known as a popular establishments in the early 1990s. DV8 and the Lizard Lounge were not in the same location, but they both spanned the 1980s era with the genre of music played there. Their popularity lasted for years, but soon dissipated as the dance set became more innovative and modern. In the mid 1990s, The Cabo opened and it became an upscale date spot, which lighted up the Greenbriar area. It changed owners and became Cabo Grande. Other date spots included Q Cafe, The Ballroom, McElroy's and Mucky Duck. The Ballroom was a pool club and the Q Cafe attracted a Latin crowd. The Guava Lamp and Davenport later opened their doors to later close after a few years. The Crystal located on Hillcroft and 59th made its own name by becoming a disco club that attracted a diverse ethnic group of patrons. The 2826 Club went through different phases of opening, closing and then reopening again. It has since then became an auto service shop. Blue Planet, Tantra and Pete's Wild Life are three other date spots along with Roxy and Sempers, which was located in close proximity to Westheimer in Richmond, TX.

During this period, nightlife was pretty cool. People would feel safe and look forward to the fun and excitement of night life. It was during this time that the Houston Rockets were rocking the NBA and winning games and championships. In the latter part of the 90s, the downtown area of Houston got its boost at the opening of the Spy, Solero and Jones bar. There was also the Prague, Mercury Room, The Tonic, State Bar and Sambuca. Club 808 and Hyperia were known for electronic music and so there was a certain type of crowd to expect. As the century turned, street construction changed the dynamics of downtown Houston and many of these places closed their doors.

Soon, there were other date spots opening in Midtown. Some of these spots included Escobar, Bond Lounge and Pub Fiction. After Midtown went through its own transition, Washington Avenue became the main location for excitement and fun. Read more about the History of Houston Date Ideas by clicking the link.
