History Of Montreal Nightlife

Montreal is our favorite French speaking city. By a long shot! Quebec was founded as province in 1608, but it wasn't until the late 1700s when Montreal became a true city. That is a hell of a long time to be around to be around. Meaning that a nightlife has been going down for so many centuries.

Now when it comes to the nightlife of Montreal, we know for a fact that this city is bumping as has been for years. The Saint-Laurent area of town is very unique in the sense that there are so many bars and clubs you won't be able to choose just one.

Back in the 1960s, there were 45 bars and clubs in the downtown area. Each one just as fun as the next. Some came with performers, some came with better drink deals, etc but they all had one thing in common, it was an escape from the real world for a little while. Because of the influx of so many bars and clubs being opened and students attending classes at McGill, it sent Montreal into a economic uprise, meaning they could afford to put up more house and apartments. More people were starting to live in downtown Montreal.

montreal02

It stayed that while for a long while. As the city grew, so did the businesses. This was great for the population because it also meant more jobs. It was a well oiled machine.

Just to give you a rundown of how long bars have been operating in Montreal, we put together a short list. So The Olde Angel has been around since 1789, The Black Bull has been around since 1833. The Royal Tavern was erected in 1851. So now you know that majority of bars in Montreal are over a hundred years old, it sort put things in perspective.

Don't get us wrong, while those bars are great, the bars that are new and opening up in the last five years are great too. Montreal is truly a cultural mecca that incorporates everyone.

Xpress is happy to help you find something fun in this city. There is so much to see and do here that you will not be bored for even a second. From the amazing food, to the fun nightclubs to the piece of Montreal history and beauty. You are sure to have a great time. That is an Xpress guarantee.
