Los Angeles Date Ideas: The History

Los Angeles has many historical and entertaining sites that played essential roles in the city over the years. The LBGT community is also ingrained into the community. This is one of the places that started the gay rights movement. Silver Lake, West Hollywood, Huntington Park and Echo Park are two areas where you would find a lot of gay bars and clubs. There are some venues that are sadly missed such as The Factory, Catch One and the Circus Disco. Studio One is one of the legendary dance clubs that was very popular among locals since 1974. It was an important venue for the gay rights movement. In fact, an AIDS event was held there during the early days of the HIV virus infection. The name changed from Studio One to the Factory and by then, you could only get in by invitation only. This club closed down to make way for a 250 room hotel. In 1995, officials wanted to make the Factory a landmark in the community , but it did not work. but, the Factory was added to the list of historic sites by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in an attempt to save the site.

On the Hollywood strip, you would find Cafe Trocadero, Ciro's and Mocambo, which were the best nightclubs and restaurants around during those days. Mocambo could be found on 8588 Sunset Blvd. It was established in 1939 and could fit up to 275 patrons. This club was a favorite among people in the movie business. These included Norma Shearer, Douglas Fairbanks Junior, Clark Gables, Henry Fonda, Errol Flynn and James Stewart; just to name a few. The club had its own orchestra conducted by Eddie Oliver and Paul Herbert on occasion. Every other Sunday, the club owner of Ciro's would allow war veterans to visit the club as guests and they would not have to pay a cover charge. Many Hollywood celebrities would volunteer their performance for the wounded veterans. The club closed down in the 1950s.
