Phoenix Date Ideas: The History

Radius night club was one of the longest in operation and it was a haven for techno music enthusiasts, but after being in business for sixteen years, the club closed its doors and converted to a concert hall known as Livewire. After the concert hall changed its owners and its name, live shows continued to be booked there over two decades. In the 1980s, the name changed to After The Gold Rush and it also changed names in the 1990s to the Electric Ballroom. Many notable performing acts were hosted at these locations. Other live concert shows took place at other venues that included L7, The Cramps, Bloodhound Gang, Social Distortion and the Blur. Livewire (or the name changes that we mentioned) ended as a concert hall in the latter part of the 1990s.

There was a misdemeanor incident that took place there and so the relevant authorities confiscated the liquor license from the owners. The building was then purchased by Aughts, which was a school for performing arts and academics. Boston's Club was another staple in the community. Many live band performances were hosted at this club. Many crazy gigs were booked such as the time when Astro Man used a Tesla coil buzzing with electricity in one of this acts. This was just one of the spectacles that cannot be forgotten, even though, the club is now closed. Tempe Bar was another well visited date spot. It operated from 1991 to 2002, but when it was opened, it was hub to alternative, rock, indie, punk and ska music.

After Boston's Club closed, the building became a dance spot for Latin music. The spot was known as Club Macarena, but that did not last for very long. In just a few months, the building was vacated, only to reopen in 2009 as 910 Live Club and music venue. Additional changes took place in 2013. The main room of the club changed to a gentleman's club. The gentleman's club was called Elite Cabaret. The back patio of the club continued to host rock concerts during specific seasons of the year. In the past, downtown Tempe had an area called Hayden Square, which a small area dedicated to music venues. Most of the bars and night spots were located in a dead end cul-de-sac on Fourth Street. Some of the bars were Chuy's, The Balboa Cafe and Edcel's Attic, which are no longer in operation, but replaced by other night spots. Hollywood Alley hosted its final live show several years ago and was in business for twenty five years.
